Bread and Butter

When two people who were walking together would pass on opposite sides of a lamp post or a parking meter or anything, actually — my mother always said “bread and butter”.  I grew up with that expression but had forgotten all about it. Last week I was walking on a paved park trail and two cyclists coming toward me split up, one passing on either side of me. “Bread and butter”, the woman on one bike shouted to me as she went by and it made me smile. Haven’t heard that in years and years.

My dad and I always said that! 🙂 Now I say it with the kids.
