The House by the Side of the Road

Our house is close to a highway.  This kind of just happened.  We moved here and needed a place to live.  The people who owned the house had moved to Alaska and desperately needed not to own it and made us a deal we” couldn’t refuse”.  The house had been rented to a family with ten children and was in pretty rough shape.  We had looked at a lot of houses that were affordable and in great shape yet as soon as I walked in the door here I had an extremely warm, nice feeling, despite the condition of the place and the nearby highway.  I could tell that really happy people had lived here.  I was sure of it, I could feel it.  “This will work great,” I told the surprised realtor almost immediately.  And for twenty-some years, it has.  It’s not fancy and the highway is occasionally a noise factor.  But really happy people still live here and it feels good every time I walk in the door.

Love this post, Mary. My home is blessed, too. The land is sacred and all beings find a safe haven here. And even though it has become a little delapidated over the years (as I have), I find it impossible to imagine leaving it.
