Outrunning Ourselves
Da Do Ron Ron. I had to google the correct spelling of the song title because when I hear it in my head, I sing ‘They Do Run Run’ — and even though it sounds like that should be put to use somehow in a panty hose commercial, ‘they do run run’ makes me picture a bunch of people racing around. Many of us seem to spend a lot of time in our lives, running — running from who we truly are, trying to squeeze into molds that don’t fit and trying to meet other people’s expectations. In my case, the strategy doesn’t work except to make me feel disingenuous when I try it. David Richo talks about a worthy goal being that of becoming the same person with everyone and in every situation. No pretending, no pretensions, no falseness. And anyway, as my husband wisely reminds me, you can’t outrun who you are.
