Hi Ho, Silver

I’m currently re-listening to the book Lonesome Dove on audible. I listen in segments because it’s close to 36 hours long but it’s so worth my time. Larry McMurtry is one of my favorite writers and this narrator is wonderful. Anyway, I was talking to my husband about the two main characters, Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, who were formerly Texas Rangers. “Just like The Lone Ranger,” he said, to which I replied, “What??????” I immediately researched the Lone Ranger and as familiar as I thought I was, I was never aware of the guy’s background. My family didn’t have a television until I was about seven and it was a grainy black-and-white Philco. We only got one station, channel 7, from the CBS affiliate about 100 miles away. In my research the other day I found out the series with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels aired on ABC. The crazy thing is, I must have at some point seen reruns because I have such a strong visual image of The Lone Ranger and “Hi Ho, Silver!” (I also never saw Howdy Doody, something my husband occasionally lords over me, because the red-haired freckled puppet was an NBC show.) My husband is a few years older than I am and he also remembers listening to The Long Ranger series on the radio, something I never did. I normally listen to audio books while I sew or cook but I am so enthralled with this narrator’s reading of Lonesome Dove, I love to sit in a comfy place and just listen to the story unfold. I find I’m listening to shorter and shorter pieces right now because I don’t want it to be over. Who knows? I may start the 36 hours all over again.
