Mirror, Mirror…………..

I remember Snow White’s stepmother constantly demanding, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” And of course the mirror always answered with the poetic Disney equivalent of, “It’s you, baby. You da one!’ Until, of course, Snow White came along and took over that dubious honor and was subsequently poisoned by an apple and well, you know the rest. That whole mirror thing made me think of my sister Judy who, when she looked in mirrors over the years, confessed to struggling with the whole aging process. I’m certain she wasn’t the only one who did but she talked openly about it and some people don’t. She read somewhere that one way to deal with her new self image was every time she looked in a mirror, to compliment herself right out loud. The article had said you should remember the child within you and throw that into the mix. She decided to try that and for a while recited, “You’re beautiful, little Judy. I love you.” I asked her how that was working out. It wasn’t. I tried to get her to agree that she and I would cover large mirrors in our houses and not look in small mirrors for a week either. “I’ll do it if you will,” I told her.” I’ll tell you I’m doing it, but I really won’t,” she said. “I’m going to lie.”. Her honesty made me laugh. I thought of her when I read the essay Anne Lamott always publishes at this time of year. I share it on Facebook each time because I love it so much. I hope it will be accessible here. If not, you can cut and paste the link into your browser. If it still won’t work, shoot me an email and I’ll try and find a way to send it another way. It’s a good reminder on New Year’s Day or any other time.
