Oatmeal
My mother used to fix oatmeal for breakfast on cold winter mornings. It was delicious and more importantly, she told me it would “stick to my ribs”. I always have assumed that sticking to my ribs meant that it would stay with me, that I wouldn’t be hungry until at least lunchtime and maybe later than that, if it lived up to its promise — but that’s never been the case. Whenever I have oatmeal for breakfast, I can pretty much guarantee I’m going to be absolutely starving barely an hour later and I can’t figure this out. When I make oatmeal, I bulk it up with nuts and dried fruit — to no avail. I’m still hungry before much time passes. Maybe it doesn’t make it all the way down to my stomach — maybe on the way, it does somehow actually stick to my ribs.
