You Can Do Anything You Want to Do
A couple of years ago I started a new direction in business and someone told me, “You can do anything you want to do.” It was meant to be a positive statement of encouragement — but when things didn’t lead where I had expected and it became obvious that I needed to back up and take a look at the viability of the venture, I was disappointed — mostly in myself. Theoretically, I should be able to do anything I wanted to do, right? No matter how much self talk I did, how many inspirational books I read, and how many times my husband told me in my favorite Tony Soprano imitation to fuhgetaboutit, that it didn’t reflect on me personally, I was frustrated. I’m learning that not everything is dependent on my effort and a valid change of heart is not failure. Starting over may be scary but an unexpected outcome doesn’t have to be devastating.
