Getting Up in the Morning

I was listening to a Tom Paxton song and the lyrics went like this: “It’s a long and dusty road. A hot and heavy load. The folks I meet ain’t always kind. Some are bad, some are good, Some have done the best they could.” The words reminded me of a guy I knew back when we lived in Maine. He told me no matter what happened, he tried to remind himself he was still better off than a lot of people. He said that the best some people can do is to just get out of bed in the morning. Boy, is that ever true. Good for me to remember that. Probably true for almost everybody to remember it. That same friend was at our house with his family not too long after that. After our dinner together his family piled in their car and left and came back about ten minutes later. I wondered what they had forgotten but what happened is on the way home they noticed a beautiful rainbow and hurried back to tell us. He wanted to make sure we would go outside to look and wouldn’t miss it. It was a small thing and it was a long time ago but I never forgot. A  rainbow sighting is a gift meant to be shared.
