Roller Derby Hero

The recent national news story about the roller derby girl stopping a mugger who was attempting to steal an elderly woman’s purse felt extra important because it happened in the town where I live.  She chased him from the grocery store through a four-lane highway, cornered him and got the woman’s purse back. I remember seeing roller derby events on television years ago and then I didn’t hear much about them for a long time. I’m not sure why they lost popularity but as far as I can tell, interest has rebounded and that makes me happy — I’ve been secretly enamored of roller derby girls since first hearing Jim Croce’s song, “Roller Derby Queen” in the early 1970’s.  The mugger-thwarter here works as a nurse when she’s not skating for the Spokannibals and I hope she’s hanging around the aisles of the stores where I shop, just in case I ever need her.
