Spelling Counts
Near my house there’s a busy road with a housing development on either side. Along the way a street intersects — and until recently the dividing road was on one side called Bridal Trail, on the other Bridle Trail. I suppose the initial naming in this new housing area was accomplished via phone, probably by two different people — but what a difference the spelling makes. On one side I visualized newlyweds marching down the aisle, followed by a stream of spiffy looking attendants — and on the other, cowboys languidly riding their horses down a scenic dirt path. The signs stood like that for a couple of years and then someone must have noticed the discrepancy because now the streets on both sides have signs that read Bridle Trail. I liked it the other way. Made that area of new houses that are all fairly similar, much more interesting.
