Sunday Night Supper

When I was growing up, Sundays meant church in the morning and a big midday meal followed by a lazy afternoon when the grownups read the newspaper or napped, the kids played.  Sunday nights we had popcorn for dinner and watched the Ed Sullivan Show.  That was our family ritual. I’m a planner and I like to figure out meals ahead of time around here, regardless of the day of the week.  Last week it got to be almost dinnertime on Sunday and we had taken nothing out of the freezer, didn’t have leftovers, didn’t feel like going out and as attractive as it sounded, ruled out Ben and Jerry’s for the main course that night.  We ended up with grilled cheese sandwiches — “toasties”, if you live in England — and tomato soup.  It tasted so good, we may make toasties and tomato soup our regular Sunday evening thing.
