Unity

I live in Seattle and if you follow sports at all, you know the Seattle Seahawks are off to the Super Bowl in two weeks. Seattle is Hawk-Crazy right now. People everywhere are wearing Seahawks gear and “Go Hawks” has become the new version of “Have a nice day” in checkout lines. The thing that led to this was the NFL championship game on Sunday and yes, I know it’s just a game but what I saw was a people united. Unified. A cohesion I haven’t been aware of since I can’t remember when. There’s been such anger. Frustration. Blame. Name-calling. Separation. It’s felt like a civil war in this country for such a long time now. It’s become the norm to criticize family members, neighbors, and people who have been our friends. There are masked men on the streets, hustling people into cars and driving away with them to who knows where. A lack of safely in neighborhoods. Just plain meanness and what I was taught to call “evil”. And with good reason. People are scared to trust. But for a couple of shining days leading up to Sunday’s game and now since then, there’s a genuine feeling of warmth. Of friendliness. My hope is that people will see how good it feels to hang together. That it will usher in more kindness and understanding overall toward each another. It’s just a game. But if that’s what it takes for us to have this time of togetherness and dare I say love, then…………..Go Hawks!
