Winning

I happened to catch the end of the World Cup game between Spain and Cape Verde yesterday. The game ended in a 0 – 0 tie but I have never seen such unbridled joy without a win involved. The people representing Cape Verde in the stands were waving flags. Both the players and the spectators hugged each other and cried. Fans rushed onto the field………..um, excuse me, the pitch. (I’d forgotten that term, with no more new Ted Lasso episodes to watch.) The reason for the euphoria was it was the first time Cape Verde had made it into the games and Spain had been predicted to win the whole World Cup. You don’t necessarily have to have more points to qualify as a winner. You just have to hold off the other side. The final on the scoreboard said 0 – 0 and Cape Verde definitely counted it as a win. Winning isn’t everything.
