A House Is Just a House

Yesterday I saw an article in the Seattle Times about a house here on Lake Washington, on the east side of Seattle. It is owned by an heir to the Scripps broadcasting fortune and was listed for sale for $22.8 million. Twenty two and eight tenths of a million dollars. For a house. Some of the Seahawk players who choose to live in Seattle year round live in that same area but I haven’t seen prices on their digs. This one merited a story in the newspaper and was credited as being the most expensive real estate deal of the year. I know of people who put a lot of stock in where they live and in what kind of house but I’m still trying to wrap my head around that Scripps deal. My siblings were and are particular about color combinations and furniture. I care immensely about some things in life but I didn’t inherit the decorating gene. Where we last lived I had a friend whose husband was in the military until he retired and they moved all over the place for years. They had many different homes. The last one was where I knew them. They’d had it designed and built specifically just how they wanted. When they decided it was time to move into a retirement community I asked my friend if she hated to leave that special house. She shrugged and said simply, “It’s just a house”. I like that attitude.
