Choir Credit

One of our granddaughters sings in the Seattle Children’s Choir and of course, we go to the concerts. At the last one, there was a boy about ten years old in the group and he seemed to be actually physically restraining himself. He threw back his head as he sang and struggled not to throw his arms out wide and belt out the songs. He was enjoying it that much and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Such joy. When the concert was over, the choir director bowed and there was a ton of applause. Over and done. So here’s what I found slightly troubling. The choir director did a marvelous job but still, it seemed to me the kids who sang should have been the ones taking a big bow. It made me think. It’s the ordinary people who do the most of the work and most of the good in this world. The common folk. Someone who helps an old person cross the street. The person who pays for somebody else’s groceries in the checkout line when that person comes up short. The kid who opens the door for another person. The grandparent who dries a child’s tears when a kid falls or is made fun of. The humanitarian who helps find a lost dog or cat. Or feeds a stray dog or cat and gets them to a safe shelter. Those are the everyday heroes. I’m not saying the choir directors of the world shouldn’t get their just due. They deserve applause and adulations. They’re just not the only ones.
