Inner Valkyrie

One of our granddaughters graduated from high school last week. The commencement speaker was a woman named Dr. Mary Brunkow, who had graduated from that same high school and is now a Nobel Prize winner in one of the Sciences. I braced myself for what could be a dull talk but she turned out to be an interesting speaker. One of the things I took away was that these kids, now on the brink of other things, could “reinvent” themselves. She used that as an example because she had gone from something she had thought she wanted to do with her life, to something entirely different. Then and there I decided to reinvent myself. As a Valkyrie. You know, one of those powerful female figures in Norse mythology. I don’t need the horned helmet or the breast plate with pointy parts. A Valkyrie is the internal image I ‘m going to carry of myself. Fierce. Strong yet caring. Courageous in the face of injustice. I have so far said this to about four people and each one laughed pretty hard when I told them but that’s okay. My inner Valkyrie is tough. She can take it.
