Party on

I notice that the expression “right on” has made a comeback. Maybe it never went away, I don’t know. But I’ve always claimed it as belonging to my generation and I remember it as kind of an emphatic statement. Right ON!! The way I hear it being used now is in a relaxed nonchalant way, sometimes accompanied by a small agreeing nod of the head. Right on. Very little emphasis. No conviction. How disappointing. My husband and I were in a furniture store a couple of months ago to look for a new, smaller sofa. The sales person we ended up with was a nice guy who looked like he was probably in his 70’s. He wasn’t the fastest at the computer end of things but he was a great sales person and helped us find what we wanted without any kind of hard sell. We had fun in the store. The thing that cracked me up was, after all the talking and our choosing a sofa and the money that of course changed hands, his last words when we left the store were, “Party on!” As soon as he said it he looked at me with kind of a puzzled expression, shook his head and said, “I don’t where that came from.” He didn’t miss a beat. He didn’t think about it. Party on. And peace out.
