Forgiveness

A friend who is staying with his family in another city told me his sister and brother-in-law went to church on Sunday. My friend chose to stay home and clean their house for them. If you know me at all, you’ll know I’d have chosen any sermon at any church, at any time, before cleaning. I am obviously of a different mindset than my friend. When his family came home from church, they told him about the sermon. I asked him what the subject was and he said it was forgiveness. When I heard that, I decided I really would have preferred the sermon. I think forgiveness is a highly underrated quality these days. My growing-up family pretty much believed it was important to hang onto things when feeling slighted. As a result, some people in my family have held onto grudges for thirty, forty, and fifty years. One time I asked a relative if it wasn’t time to give up one of their childhood grievances and that person quickly and unequivocally answered, “No”. It takes a lot of mental energy to do that and not channel positivity and I, for one, need all the mental energy I can get. Overall, forgiveness is taking a back seat in this country right now. I say we bring it back.
