The Wind in the Windows

The windows in my house make a wonderful noise on windy days and I was able to enjoy that a lot during the unusually gusty weather we had this summer. It’s technically not a good thing — it means that the windows don’t fit very well but I think of my windows as having the ability to whistle. I’ve never been much good at whistling, myself — when I used to try, my mother would roll her eyes and laughingly declare “holzpfeife”, the German word meaning “wooden whistle”.  In the winter, the whistling noise should theoretically give me a chill, yet just the opposite —  it makes me feel cozy and warm to be sitting inside next to a roaring wood stove while the wind howls outside. We definitely need new energy efficient ones but when we decide we can spring for them, I will miss my whistling windows like crazy.
