Chimney Decor

My husband’s mother had a crazy saying she threw into conversations every now and then: “Well, sew buttons on a chimney.” She used it kind of like Tony Soprano would shrug and say, ‘Whaddaya gonna do?” It certainly didn’t have the same ring as Tony’s delivery. Mostly it caused us to just shake our heads and wonder what the heck?!?! But now and then we use it around here, just because it’s so silly and makes no sense. But the other day when my husband said it, I decided to look online and see what A-I said it meant. A-I took my question very seriously, which I thought was hilarious. Here was the answer:

While traditional sewing techniques cannot be applied to a brick or stone chimney, you can attach decorative buttons or button-like items to a chimney using adhesives, masonry anchors, or mortar.

Methods for Attaching Buttons to a Chimney

  • Construction Adhesive (Easiest Method): Use a strong exterior-grade construction adhesive like PL Premium to glue buttons directly onto brick or mortar.
  • Masonry Anchors (Most Secure): For large, heavy buttons, drill into the mortar using a masonry bit, insert a concrete
  • Mortar or Epoxy: Apply a small amount of exterior epoxy or mortar to the back of the button and press it into a pre-drilled shallow hole or directly onto the mortar joint.

A-I has no sense of irony. Or humor.
