Made With Love

The other day I had breakfast at one of my favorite places. It was early in the day and Rita’s made-from-scratch frosted sugar cookies were just coming out of the oven, getting ready to be wrapped and sold at lunchtime — or before, for those of us who might have an earlier-in-the-day cookie craving.  I adore Rita’s sugar cookies and she knows that — she set aside a couple for me to take along after breakfast.  I reported to her that someone had told me of some delicious sugar cookies they had tasted from a bakery in town — I said that I had set that person straight and let them know that Rita’s cookies are the all-time best sugar cookies anywhere, bar none.  She said, “That’s because I make them with love.” The idea of eating a little bit of love whenever I treat myself to one of these gems helps to compensate for any guilt over their decadence.   “I make them with love,” she repeated…………….smilingly adding “and a whole lot of butter doesn’t hurt, either.”

How cool that your dad felt the same way, about baking for people. Schmidt’s Bakery was the best!! Glad I don’t remember any sugar cookies from your dad’s bakery, otherwise I’d be forced to compare with Rita’s. And I don’t want to do that! 🙂

Your family’s bakery made the best brownies, EVER. The pan of brownies was displayed in the front window, and I think they sold for 15 cents each.

When I finally learned that food needs to be infused with love, and I cooked with intention, my pot roast became a family favorite. As a corollary to that, sharing a meal with friends makes the food taste even better.
